South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented the country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was 25.
The tragic news was confirmed on Saturday by South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, who described Adams as one of the nation’s most promising footballers.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,” McKenzie said.
The minister did not reveal the cause of the player’s death.
Meanwhile, Western Cape police have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said authorities were examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing.
Adams was part of South Africa’s squad at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in all three of the team’s group-stage matches. However, he did not play in Bafana Bafana’s knockout-stage defeat to Canada.
Born in Cape Town, Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before earning a move to CAF Champions League holders Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he established himself as one of the country’s leading midfielders.
His death comes barely a month after he lost his grandmother on the eve of South Africa’s Group A clash against Czechia at the World Cup.
At the time, the South African Football Association commended Adams for his professionalism after he chose to play despite grieving.
The association noted that the midfielder “gave everything for his country” even while mourning the loss of his grandmother.
The football community in South Africa and beyond has continued to pay tribute to the talented midfielder, whose sudden death has left teammates, supporters and the nation in shock.
