Kano Trains 44 LGAs on Health Data
The Kano State Ministry of Health and the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board (KSPHCMB), in collaboration with MSI International, have trained Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Officers from the state’s 44 Local Government Areas on effective health data management and reporting.
The two-day training, held from August 22 to 23, 2026, at Butterfly Garden Hotel, Kaduna, focused on strengthening data management, monitoring and evidence-based decision-making for family planning and other health interventions across the state.
Speaking at the training, the Director-General of KSPHCMB, Prof. Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, described M&E Officers as the “engine rooms” of the state’s health data system, commending them for their contributions to improving health data management in Kano.
He said the state’s performance in health data management had attracted commendation at both state and national levels, including recognition from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).
Ibrahim also acknowledged the support of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, particularly his investments in the health sector.
According to him, the investments include free maternal health services across 484 apex health facilities, 500 free Caesarean sections monthly and the provision of free maternal and child health commodities valued at between N50 million and N60 million.
The training reviewed progress recorded through outreach, MS Ladies channels and other family planning interventions, with participants examining data flow across the various reporting channels.

The participants also identified challenges affecting monthly reporting of outreach and MS Ladies activities from health facilities and discussed practical measures to improve data quality, completeness and timely reporting.
In a presentation, the Regional Manager, North-West 1, MSI Nigeria Reproductive Choices, Hajiya Suwaiba Abubakar, highlighted the Expanding Access to Family Planning Project being implemented in Kano and Kaduna states.
She said the project was designed to increase access to comprehensive family planning services, expand method choice and accelerate progress towards Nigeria’s Family Planning 2030 goals.
Abubakar said the initiative places particular emphasis on first-time parents and potential postpartum family planning users.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen the capacity of M&E Officers across the 44 LGAs and improve the quality and timeliness of health data for planning, accountability and decision-making.
It is also expected to contribute to increased family planning client visits, improved uptake among adolescents and young people and greater adoption of family planning services across Kano State.
