The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has officially handed over the newly renovated DISO Primary Health Care Centre in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State to the State Primary Health Care Management Board.

The upgrade was carried out under a Global Fund-supported initiative, with UNICEF acting as the implementing partner for the rehabilitation of five primary healthcare facilities across Kano State.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Tuesday, UNICEF Chief of Field Office in Kano, Shafeeq Ur-Rehman, said the intervention was designed to expand access to safe, functional and quality healthcare services for communities.

He said, “This upgraded facility represents our collective effort to ensure that people at the grassroots have access to reliable and quality healthcare services close to where they live.”

Ur-Rehman explained that the centre would serve women, children, adolescents and other residents, adding that strengthening primary healthcare remains key to reducing preventable illnesses and deaths.

He noted that the project highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, development partners and local communities in improving health systems.

The UNICEF official commended the Kano State Government, the State Primary Health Care Management Board, Gwale Local Government Council, traditional rulers, community leaders and the Global Fund for their roles in supporting the project.

He urged relevant authorities to ensure proper maintenance of the facility, adequate staffing with qualified health workers, and consistent supply of essential medicines, vaccines and other medical commodities.

According to him, community involvement and continuous monitoring would be critical to sustaining the gains of the investment.

“The real success of this intervention will not be measured by the structure itself, but by the number of lives positively impacted through the services delivered here,” he said.

Ur-Rehman also called on residents and community leaders to take ownership of the facility and protect it to ensure long-term sustainability.

He described the handover as a step towards strengthening healthcare delivery in Gwale and surrounding communities, adding that UNICEF remains committed to supporting Kano State in improving maternal and child health outcomes.
