NSE Hosts Memorial Lecture on Nigeria’s Housing Solutions

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Maiduguri Branch, has held the fifth edition of the Engr. Mustapha Bulama, FNSE, OON Memorial Lecture, bringing together engineering professionals, policymakers and development stakeholders to discuss practical solutions to Nigeria’s growing housing deficit.

The annual lecture focused on the theme, “Innovative Pathways to Tackling Nigeria’s Growing Housing Deficit: Local Materials and Industrial Efficiency of Prefab Solutions,” highlighting the role of modern construction techniques and locally sourced building materials in expanding access to affordable housing.

The event featured the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Mohammed Goni Alkali, as the Special Guest of Honour, while the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, attended as the Distinguished Guest of Honour.

Speaking at the gathering, participants stressed the need for Nigeria to embrace innovative construction technologies capable of reducing building costs, shortening project delivery timelines and improving the quality of housing across the country.

“Harnessing locally available materials alongside prefabricated building technology can significantly reduce the nation’s housing deficit while promoting sustainable development,” a speaker at the event said.

The memorial lecture also underscored the importance of stronger collaboration among government institutions, engineering professionals, researchers and the private sector to accelerate the adoption of cost-effective housing solutions.

“Innovation and industrial efficiency must remain central to efforts aimed at providing affordable, durable and resilient housing for Nigeria’s growing population,” another participant noted.

The annual Engr. Mustapha Bulama Memorial Lecture honours the late engineering icon’s contributions to the profession while providing a platform for addressing critical national development issues through engineering expertise and innovations.
