The Kano State Censorship Board has stopped a planned unofficial debate involving Islamic singers Malam Usman Maidubun Isa and Malam Sulaiman Uzair, warning that the event could trigger tension and disrupt public peace.
In a statement issued by Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Board, “the agency said the proposed debate was organised without approval from relevant authorities, including the Kano State Shari’a Commission, the Kano State Council of Ulama, and the Censorship Board itself”.
The Board described the action as a violation of state regulations guiding the activities of Islamic singers and warned that those involved could face legal consequences.
According to the statement, a similar unsanctioned debate held months earlier resulted in unrest among supporters of Malam Usman Maidubun Isa and Malam Shehi Maitajul’izzi, prompting authorities to take preventive measures against a repeat occurrence.
The Board stressed that its mandate includes supervising and regulating the activities of Islamic singers in Kano State to safeguard peace, morality, and public order.
Security agencies were urged to take appropriate steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order linked to the proposed event.
The Board also appealed to Islamic singers and residents to cooperate with authorities in promoting harmony, unity, and peaceful coexistence across the state.
