The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Federal Ministry of Transportation have commenced plans to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway operational facilities to the national electricity grid as part of efforts to improve the reliability and efficiency of rail services.
The initiative, discussed during a stakeholders’ meeting in Kano, is expected to provide stable electricity to railway infrastructure, enhance rail operations and strengthen critical transport infrastructure across the country.
Participants at the meeting examined the project’s technical requirements, implementation timelines, operational coordination and the responsibilities of the various agencies involved. They also reviewed measures to ensure compliance with national grid standards, network safety and the seamless integration of railway facilities into the country’s transmission network.
Speaking at the meeting, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, stressed the importance of sustained collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.
“Early technical planning and close collaboration among all parties will guarantee smooth project execution and provide dependable electricity supply to the railway facilities,” Bello said.
He noted that reliable power would play a vital role in improving railway operations and supporting the Federal Government’s drive to modernise critical infrastructure.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Federal Government’s infrastructure development agenda.
According to TCN, the planned grid connection is expected to improve operational efficiency within the railway system, enhance service delivery in the transportation sector and boost the reliability of critical national infrastructure through a stable electricity supply.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Region, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project consultants Team Nigeria, and the project contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
