FRSC, Military Launch Joint Operation Against Traffic Violations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to launch a joint special operation with the military to curb illegal parking and unsafe transportation practices along the AYA Bridge and the Zuba–Gwagwalada–Abaji highway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FCT Sector Commander, Tijjani Ilyasu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja, saying the exercise is aimed at restoring order on major roads and reducing traffic congestion caused by commercial vehicles.

According to him, indiscriminate parking by commercial drivers on the AYA–Nyanya corridor has become a major cause of persistent gridlock and frequent vehicle breakdowns, disrupting the smooth movement of commuters.

“The illegal activities of commercial drivers on the AYA–Nyanya route have contributed significantly to daily traffic congestion and recurrent vehicle breakdowns, hindering the free flow of traffic,” Ilyasu said.

The sector commander explained that the Corps had held several strategic meetings with the military and other security agencies to ensure effective traffic management and improve safety across the FCT.

He added that discussions had also been held with the national leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other transport unions to strengthen collaboration in tackling traffic violations, particularly those involving commercial drivers.

Ilyasu revealed that the NURTW had already nominated members who would undergo FRSC training as part of a joint task force to eliminate illegal motor parks and roadside loading activities across the territory.

“The transport unions have shown willingness to support our efforts, and together we will work to eradicate illegal roadside operations and improve compliance with traffic regulations,” he said.

The FRSC boss reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to address persistent violations of traffic laws across the six area councils of the FCT.

He also expressed concern over the growing number of attacks on FRSC personnel during enforcement operations, warning that the Corps would no longer tolerate assaults on its officers while carrying out their lawful duties.

Ilyasu commended the FCT Judiciary for expanding the number of magistrates assigned to mobile courts, describing the development as a major boost to traffic law enforcement.

According to him, the number of mobile courts has increased from three to eight, allowing for quicker prosecution of traffic offenders and serving as a deterrent against road traffic violations.

The sector commander further assured residents that the FRSC would continue its partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to curb drug abuse among motorists, while sustaining public awareness campaigns against the sale and consumption of alcohol at motor parks.

He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations at all times and encouraged members of the public to report any FRSC personnel found engaging in unprofessional conduct for appropriate disciplinary action.
