Liverpool have dismissed manager Arne Slot following a difficult 2025/26 campaign in which the club finished fifth in the Premier League and failed to mount a sustained title challenge.
The decision ends the Dutch coach’s spell at Anfield just one year after he guided the Reds to the league title in his first season, succeeding former manager Jurgen Klopp.
Slot joined Liverpool from Feyenoord in 2024 and made an immediate impact, leading the club to Premier League success and earning widespread praise from supporters and pundits.
However, Liverpool struggled to replicate that form during the following season. Rather than competing for another title, the club found itself battling for a Champions League place and ended the campaign without any major domestic trophy.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Liverpool acknowledged Slot’s contribution to the club while explaining the rationale behind the decision.
The club described the move as a difficult one, highlighting the significant role Slot played during his time at Anfield and crediting him for delivering success during a period of transition.
Liverpool also praised the former manager’s commitment and leadership, noting that he embraced the challenge of taking over after Klopp and remained dedicated throughout a demanding season.
Despite those achievements, the club said it believed a new direction was needed to help Liverpool progress and compete again for top honours.
Attention has already turned to the search for a replacement, with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola reportedly among the leading contenders.
Iraola enhanced his reputation after guiding Bournemouth to a sixth-place league finish and a historic qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
“Liverpool’s decision marks the start of another significant chapter for the club as it looks to rebuild and re-establish itself among the leading forces in English football”.
