Somali Referee Accepts World Cup Entry Denial As Fate

Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has described his failed attempt to enter the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as destiny, urging young Somalis to remain hopeful despite the setback.

Artan, who was named Africa’s referee of the year in 2025, was expected to make history as the first Somali official to take part in football’s biggest tournament. However, he was denied entry into the US by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) over what American authorities described as security concerns.

Speaking after returning to Mogadishu, Artan expressed appreciation for the support he received from FIFA and encouraged his compatriots not to lose faith.

“What has happened has happened, and it was fate. I appreciate the support FIFA gave me,” Artan said, adding that Somalia remains his home regardless of challenges.

The referee advised young people in Somalia to continue believing in their country and pursuing their dreams, despite obstacles they may face.

The decision comes amid concerns over tighter immigration measures introduced by the US administration, including restrictions affecting citizens of several countries, among them Somalia.

A FIFA representative confirmed that Artan would no longer participate in training or officiating duties at the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The development sparked disappointment among Somali football supporters, who viewed Artan’s expected appearance at the World Cup as a historic achievement for the country and the African continent.

A Somali student, Abdifatah, described the decision as a major disappointment, saying Artan’s participation would have represented a significant moment for Somali football.

Photographer Najib A. Farah also criticised the move, describing Artan as an inspiration to young referees and saying the decision could send a discouraging message to aspiring sports professionals.

The Somali government said it attempted to engage with US authorities and FIFA to resolve the matter but was unsuccessful.

US officials stated that a Somali national arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul was denied entry following security screening concerns. An administration official later said the decision was linked to national security considerations.

It remains unclear which World Cup matches Artan was scheduled to officiate, as referee assignments are usually announced shortly before games.
