The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged Nigerians to remain calm, maintain proper hygiene and cooperate with public health authorities following the Federal Government’s confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The IGP, in a statement, stressed the need for public awareness and strict adherence to preventive measures to protect lives and prevent further spread of the disease.

He advised members of the public to wash their hands regularly with soap and water, avoid direct contact with the blood and body fluids of suspected cases, and stay away from items that may be contaminated with the virus.

Disu also warned against touching or washing the bodies of persons suspected to have died from Ebola, noting the importance of observing safety precautions to minimise the risk of infection.

He urged anyone who might have been exposed to the virus to contact health authorities promptly for guidance. Individuals who develop symptoms after possible exposure were advised to avoid physical contact with others and call the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) toll-free helpline on 6232 for immediate assistance.

The police chief further directed officers to observe appropriate infection prevention measures while performing their duties and ensure that suspected cases are referred to qualified health professionals.

He emphasised that suspected patients, contacts and healthcare workers should be treated with dignity and without discrimination.

The Nigeria Police Force also called on Nigerians to cooperate with contact-tracing teams, provide accurate information when required and avoid spreading unverified reports that could trigger unnecessary fear and panic.

It urged the public to rely on official information from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the NCDC and other authorised public health agencies.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to supporting relevant health authorities in protecting lives and maintaining public order during the period.

It called on Nigerians to remain informed and vigilant while avoiding the stigmatisation of suspected cases, contacts and affected individuals, stressing that protecting public health requires collective responsibility.
