President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect, citing the need to address prevailing security concerns across the country.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who noted that the appointment was made in line with existing legal provisions.
The President expressed confidence that Disu’s professional background, operational experience, and leadership abilities would provide effective direction for the Nigeria Police Force at a crucial period.
According to the statement, the President will soon convene a session of the Nigeria Police Council to formally deliberate on Disu’s nomination as substantive Inspector-General. Following the council’s consideration, his name is expected to be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with the Police Act.
President Tinubu also reiterated his administration’s resolve to improve national security, strengthen institutional frameworks, and ensure the police remain professional, accountable, and adequately equipped to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the President accepted the resignation of the outgoing Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down after submitting a letter citing personal and family reasons.
Tinubu commended Egbetokun for his years of service to the police and the country, praising his dedication and commitment to reinforcing Nigeria’s internal security system during his tenure.
“Egbetokun, appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act”.
