The Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN) has been recognised as the highest-ranked university in the Republic of Niger in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, reinforcing its growing reputation for academic excellence, research and sustainable development.
According to the latest rankings, the university secured the top position in Niger Republic, ranked 14th among Africa’s private universities, and was placed within the 801-1000 global category.
The recognition places both the institution and Niger Republic in a stronger position on the global higher education landscape through inclusion in one of the world’s most respected university assessment systems.
The development was announced in a statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Shuaibu Tanko, and made available to journalists in Kano.
The statement said the achievement reflects MAAUN’s commitment to delivering quality bilingual education while promoting innovation, research and human capital development across West Africa.
It noted that the university has made notable contributions to healthcare education through its Colleges of Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing Sciences, Public Health and other allied health programmes, producing thousands of graduates serving in hospitals, research institutions, diagnostic centres and public health organisations within and outside Niger Republic.
According to the university, its alumni continue to play significant roles in strengthening healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality medical services in different countries.
The institution also highlighted its investments in research, community service and knowledge-sharing initiatives designed to address pressing social and developmental challenges.
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess universities based on their contributions to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), measuring performance in teaching, research and societal impact.
Commenting on the achievement, Professor Ibrahim Lawal said the recognition reflects the university’s wider contributions beyond academic performance.
“The rankings go beyond traditional academic indicators by evaluating the practical impact universities make through education, research and sustainable development initiatives,” he said.
Lawal added that MAAUN’s performance in the 2026 rankings demonstrates its sustained investment in quality education, healthcare training, research and sustainable development.
“Our inclusion in the rankings strengthens MAAUN Niger’s position as an emerging centre of excellence in higher education in Africa and underscores our commitment to producing graduates capable of addressing global development challenges,” he stated.
The latest recognition is expected to further boost the university’s standing as a leading institution in health sciences education, research and sustainable development across the region.
