The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has distributed over 600 bags of rice to its members as part of its annual Christmas welfare programme, aimed at easing economic pressures and strengthening unity among journalists.

The distribution exercise, held in Abuja, marks the second consecutive year the initiative has been implemented under the leadership of the NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike.

The programme is designed to support journalists amid prevailing economic challenges and to promote solidarity within the union.

Addressing members during the exercise, Comrade Ike said the initiative goes beyond seasonal goodwill, describing it as a reflection of the council’s responsibility to prioritise the welfare of journalists who play critical roles in public information and accountability.

She noted that the welfare intervention, which recorded a positive impact during its inaugural edition last year, has now become a tradition anchored on the council’s resolve to stand by its members during difficult times.

According to her, the gesture symbolises the council’s recognition of journalists as key stakeholders in democratic governance and public service within the Federal Capital Territory.

Leadership Receives Vote of Confidence

Earlier, the NUJ FCT Executive Council held an end-of-year interactive session with members of the State Executive Council, comprising chairmen and secretaries of various chapels.

During the meeting, Comrade Ike briefed participants on the council’s activities and ongoing projects, including the construction and remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall.

Members of the National Executive Council (NEC) unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the current leadership, commending the administration for what they described as focused and results-oriented stewardship.

The chairman called for continued cooperation among members to sustain ongoing projects and consolidate the progress recorded by the council.

Call for Unity and Solidarity

Comrade Ike urged journalists to uphold unity and collective responsibility, noting the professional and personal challenges often associated with media practice.

She also expressed appreciation to sponsors, partners and members of the Executive Council for their contributions to the success of the welfare initiative.

As members received their allocations, the NUJ FCT Chairman encouraged them to embrace the spirit of the festive season with renewed commitment to their professional duties.

The Christmas welfare initiative highlights the NUJ FCT Council’s ongoing efforts to support journalists’ wellbeing while fostering cohesion within the union.
