The Kano State Police Command has arrested a suspect accused of circulating audio and video recordings on social media containing statements believed to be capable of causing public unrest in Kano.

In a public notice released on Thursday, the command said the suspect was apprehended during a sting operation and is currently being interrogated by investigators.

According to the police, the materials had been widely shared online and were considered capable of spreading fear and disturbing public peace in the state.

The command stated that it takes the matter seriously and warned that anyone found responsible for producing or spreading such content would face legal consequences once investigations are completed.

Authorities also cautioned the public against creating or sharing messages that promote hate speech, incitement, or any form of communication that could lead to violence.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has reassured residents that the situation is under control and that adequate security arrangements are in place to maintain peace across the state.

Speaking during a joint press briefing at the police headquarters, the Ibrahim Waiya said the government is working closely with security agencies to address misinformation and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Waiya expressed concern about the increasing misuse of social media platforms to spread false or harmful information, noting that such actions could damage reputations and threaten public stability.

He described Kano as a major commercial and cultural centre in northern Nigeria and stressed that the government would not allow attempts to destabilize the state through misleading narratives or divisive content.

The commissioner also assured residents that their safety remains a top priority, adding that the government will continue to strengthen cooperation with security agencies to sustain peace.

The police further urged members of the public to remain calm but vigilant and encouraged them to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency contacts.

Community leaders, traditional rulers and religious figures were also called upon to support efforts aimed at promoting peace, unity and mutual understanding among residents.
