The Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has presented its one-year stewardship report, outlining interventions in members’ welfare, professional development and institutional growth.

The Chairman of the chapel, Alhaji Murtala Adewale, disclosed this during the presentation of the administration’s 12-month scorecard and first anniversary celebration at the NUJ Secretariat in Kano.

He said the executive provided financial assistance to 10 members, facilitated loans totalling N8.5 million, secured two Hajj slots and offered N2 million in medical support to a member.

Adewale also listed the distribution of Ramadan food items worth N2.5 million and the introduction of an additional monthly welfare package of N30,000 among the administration’s interventions during the period.

He said the chapel also focused on improving journalists’ professional skills and social wellbeing through initiatives such as the Tea Break Platform, a four-day capacity-building retreat in Kaduna and the Distinguished Awards of Excellence.

According to him, the administration established a Cooperative Society with an initial N10 million capital base to provide members with better access to financial assistance.

He added that an Olympic-standard table tennis facility was installed to promote recreation and healthy lifestyles among members.

The chairman further highlighted the production of a Government Compendium documenting the activities and development efforts of the Kano State Government.

Other initiatives, he said, included the provision of unlimited 5G internet, installation and maintenance of DSTV services, employment of a cleaner, procurement of office equipment, reactivation of the chapel’s bank account and establishment of an official Facebook page.

The administration also maintained regular refreshments for members, he added.

Adewale attributed the achievements to the cooperation and commitment of members, pledging continued efforts to promote transparency, accountability, professional ethics and journalists’ capacity development.

The anniversary event was attended by senior journalists, media executives, academics and representatives of government and professional organisations, who praised the chapel for publicly accounting for its activities and achievements.
