Lionel Messi was left in tears after Argentina’s bid to retain the FIFA World Cup trophy ended in disappointment, following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States.
The 39-year-old Argentine captain, who played a key role in his team’s campaign with a string of impressive displays, struggled to contain his emotions as he collected his runners-up medal.
Argentina had hoped to become the first men’s team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup, but Spain denied them the opportunity with a narrow victory.
Ferran Torres scored just 37 seconds into the second half of extra time to hand Spain their second World Cup title and crown an impressive tournament for La Furia Roja.
Spain controlled much of the encounter, enjoying a commanding 20-1 advantage in shots and completing 845 passes, compared with Argentina’s 433.
Reflecting on the defeat, Messi admitted that Spain deserved the victory but expressed pride in the efforts of his teammates and appreciation for the support of Argentine fans.
“I feel sad, but I know we gave everything we had,” Messi said.
“They were better, honestly. We lost, and we have to accept it. But that does not erase everything we have achieved. I want to thank my people, my teammates and the entire country.”
With Messi set to turn 40 before the next World Cup, questions remain over whether he will continue his international career.
However, his performance at the 2026 tournament has renewed speculation that the veteran forward could make another appearance at the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with the opening matches planned for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay as part of celebrations marking the competition’s centenary.
