Nigeria has recorded its first tele-robotic surgery, with a surgeon remotely performing a complex kidney cancer operation on a patient in Abuja from Mowe, Ogun State.
The procedure, a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous kidney tumour, was carried out by Redeemer’s Health Village in collaboration with RoboMed Global.

The surgeon operated the robotic system in real time from a Toumai console at the health facility in Mowe, while the patient was at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, about 500 kilometres away.
The procedure marks a significant development in Nigeria’s adoption of remote surgical technology, demonstrating the potential for specialist surgeons to provide complex surgical care to patients located far from them.
