Dangote Backs Daughters for Business Succession

Africa’s richest industrialist, Aliko Dangote, has dismissed the idea that he needs a male heir to succeed him as head of his business empire, saying any of his three daughters could lead the Dangote Group.

Dangote made the remarks in an interview with ARISE News while discussing succession, family and the future of his business empire.

The billionaire said his daughters, Halima, Fatima and Mariya, had shown interest in business and possessed the potential to take the company to a higher level.

“I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead,” Dangote said. Asked whether all three could run the business, he replied, “All of them.”

He said gender should not determine succession, stressing that competence, education and creativity were more important considerations.

Dangote also cautioned against having a son solely for the purpose of succession, saying such a move could be counterproductive if the heir lacked the capacity to protect and expand the family’s legacy.

He said the future of the Dangote Group should be anchored on professional management and strong corporate governance rather than family expectations.

Dangote cited global companies such as Microsoft and Apple as examples of businesses that have continued to thrive beyond their founders.

He said his ultimate legacy was not simply about who inherited his wealth but what the business achieved for Africa.
