The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano-Jigawa Area Command, generated N88.925 billion in revenue between January and the first week of September 2026, while recording seizures and detentions with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N2.159 billion.

The Acting Area Comptroller of the Command, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, disclosed this on Friday at a press briefing held at the Customs House in Kano.

Adamu said the command recorded N63.078 billion in revenue at the end of the first half of 2026, adding that collections had increased by about N25 billion to N88.925 billion year-to-date.

He noted that July recorded the highest monthly revenue collection in the history of the command, with more than N14 billion generated during the month.

According to him, the responsibilities of the Customs Service go beyond revenue generation to include border regulation, prevention of smuggling, protection of public health and national security, as well as enforcement of relevant laws.

He said the command intercepted several prohibited, restricted and controlled goods during the period under review.

The seizures included 1,491 cartons of foreign spaghetti valued at N38.74 million; 2,928 packs of foreign macaroni worth N280.734 million; 35 bags of foreign parboiled rice valued at N8.143 million; and 19 bags of expired foreign parboiled rice worth N475,000.

The command also seized 3,000 cans of foreign refined and packaged vegetable oil with a DPV of N431.852 million and 514 cartons of assorted foreign soap valued at N38.068 million.

Adamu further disclosed that eight suspected diverted transit trucks were intercepted with a DPV of N300.906 million, while seven smuggled vehicles of different brands were seized with a combined value of N410.542 million.

He added that Customs intercepted unregistered pharmaceutical products comprising 712,690 tablets and 17,470 vials and ampoules of various brands.

The pharmaceutical products, he said, had been handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further action.

A major breakthrough recorded by the command was the interception of 48 endangered wildlife specimens on August 25.

Adamu said the seizure comprised 15 primates, including chimpanzees, gorillas and bush babies; four wildcats, including civets and caracals; 25 wild birds, including crested bustards and rock fowls; two albino crocodiles and a honey badger.

He said three suspects arrested in connection with the wildlife trafficking had been handed over to the Special Wildlife Office of the NCS for further investigation.

The Acting Comptroller described the seizure as potentially the largest and most diverse single wildlife seizure recorded in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service and possibly in the West African sub-region.

He said the operation underscored the command’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s biodiversity and fulfilling its obligations under international conventions and the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.

Other seizures recorded during the period included 6,072 pieces of counterfeit agro-packaging materials valued at N1.822 million and six diverted 40-foot transit containers with a DPV of N645.161 million.

The command also intercepted two suspects in possession of 993.9 metres of 150-square-millimetre vandalised high-voltage aluminium conductors valued at N2.882 million.

Adamu said the suspects and the materials would be handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and necessary action.

On anti-money laundering enforcement, he disclosed that Customs intercepted undeclared foreign currencies comprising $3,800, £21,975 and 827,800 Saudi Riyals.

He said the currencies and two suspects had been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Zonal Directorate for further investigation.

Adamu also expressed concern over the use of government vehicle number plates by suspected smugglers to evade Customs checks.

He warned that the command would continue to monitor the trend and take appropriate enforcement measures against those involved.

While assuring legitimate traders of the command’s support, Adamu urged businesses to comply with Customs laws and procedures, stressing that compliance would minimise delays and promote predictable trade.

He said the service would continue to support legitimate businesses through trade facilitation initiatives, including the Authorised Economic Operator, Advance Ruling and One-Stop Shop mechanisms.

The Acting Comptroller commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the management of the service for their support.

He also appreciated officers and men of the command, sister security agencies, stakeholders and the media for their continued cooperation.
