The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has confirmed Comrade Hauwa Sani Zaharaddeen and Comrade Aminu Umar Shuwajo as the substantive Secretaries of the Kano and Jigawa State Councils respectively.
Hotpen reports that Zaharaddeen’s confirmation followed the removal of the former Kano Council Secretary, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, while Shuwajo emerged following the voluntary resignation of Aisha Ahmed as Jigawa Council Secretary.
The two journalists were sworn into office during the NUJ NEC meeting held in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
Addressing the gathering after the swearing-in, NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, charged the new secretaries to discharge their responsibilities in accordance with the provisions of the NUJ Constitution.
Yahya also urged them to draw on their professional experience to strengthen the union and promote the growth of journalism in their respective councils.
He congratulated the two secretaries on their confirmation and welcomed them as members of the NUJ NEC.
In separate remarks, Zaharaddeen and Shuwajo expressed appreciation to the NUJ national leadership and members of the NEC for the confidence reposed in them.
They pledged to work closely with journalists in their respective councils to strengthen the union and uphold its core values.
Meanwhile, the NEC formally recognised the Chairman of the Kano Council, Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi, for his contributions to the union and his consistent hospitality towards members of the national executive.
Responding, Dederi thanked the national leadership for the recognition and pledged to intensify his efforts towards the growth and development of the union.
He also congratulated the Jigawa Council for successfully hosting the NEC meeting, describing it as an important opportunity for the union’s leadership to deliberate on issues affecting journalists, the media industry and the nation.
