Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Botswana, Mr. John Shama Shaga, has presented his Letters of Credence to Botswana’s President, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, at the State House in Gaborone.

The ceremony, held on July 16, 2026, featured a Guard of Honour and formally marked the commencement of Shaga’s diplomatic duties in Botswana.

During the ceremony, Shaga conveyed the warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding relations and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

He identified trade and investment, agriculture, particularly livestock, creative industries, fintech and technology, tourism, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises as key areas for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

The envoy also called for the early implementation of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement to improve connectivity and facilitate increased commercial exchanges between Nigeria and Botswana.

In his response, President Boko welcomed the Nigerian envoy and described the African Continental Free Trade Area as a major driver of Africa’s economic integration.

He expressed support for the proposed areas of cooperation, while highlighting opportunities in tourism and the legal sector.

The Botswana President also extended fraternal greetings to President Tinubu and the people of Nigeria.

Shaga, in response, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the Botswana government to deepen bilateral relations and promote shared prosperity during his tenure.
