The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja stopping its planned national convention, describing the ruling as “an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process.

The judgment was delivered by Justice Kolawole Omotosho.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party maintained that the court’s decision does not invalidate or hinder its ongoing preparations for the forthcoming National Convention to elect new national officers who will steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

Ologunagba reaffirmed the PDP’s faith in the recent Supreme Court judgment which upholds the supremacy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.

“The PDP therefore charges all members, chapters, and organs of the party to remain steadfast and focused on preparations towards the successful conduct of the National Convention,” the statement read in part.

The party further noted that, as a responsible and law-abiding institution committed to the rule of law, it has directed its legal team to immediately appeal the judgment.

It added that the PDP remains resolute in its commitment to defend and promote multiparty democracy in Nigeria.
