Somalia has introduced mandatory national identification verification for domestic travel, effective October 1, 2026, according to the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
Under the new requirement, passengers travelling within the country must present either a National ID Card or an Identification Certificate for verification.

NIRA said the measure followed a June agreement with the Immigration and Citizenship Agency aimed at strengthening identification and verification procedures for domestic travellers.
The authority urged passengers to ensure they have valid identification documents before embarking on domestic journeys to avoid delays or difficulties during travel.
