A coalition of youth and student organizations in Kano has publicly urged political stakeholders to uphold fairness and reward loyalty in the ongoing discussions surrounding the Kano Central Senatorial ticket.

The statement, issued in Kano state, by Coalition for Better Kano, Concern Kano Citizens, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Kano Axis, the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS), and other northern student stakeholders.

The groups said they were closely monitoring political developments in the state, particularly rumors suggesting that the Kano Central Senatorial ticket may be allocated to former governor, Senator Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, following his recent return to the party.

While expressing respect for Shekarau as an elder statesman, the coalition stressed that political decisions should be guided by justice, equity, and recognition of loyalty.

They noted that rewarding commitment remains essential for maintaining trust within party structures.

The statement referenced recent political arrangements in the state, including the handling of the gubernatorial ticket involving Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, which they said helped preserve stability and respect within the party.

According to the coalition, two individuals exemplify loyalty and sacrifice: “Murtala Sule Garo, who contested as deputy governor and is expected to be sworn in, and Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura (AA Zaura), who ran for the Kano Central Senatorial seat in the last election and remained committed to the party despite the outcome”.

The groups argued that with Garo now positioned within the executive arm, it would be fair and logical for Zaura to be granted the opportunity to re-contest the senatorial seat.

They warned that overlooking a loyal party member in favor of a returning figure could undermine confidence in the party’s values.

They also called on party leaders to avoid decisions that could be perceived as disregarding the efforts of dedicated members, emphasizing that such actions could send a negative message about how loyalty is treated.
Addressing Shekarau directly, the coalition appealed to him to act in a paternal capacity and avoid involvement in any process that might create perceptions of injustice among party loyalists.

The statement concluded by noting that the youth and student population in Kano are closely observing the situation and expressed hope that the final decision by party leadership would reflect fairness and uphold the principles of equity.
