The Kano State Police Command has arrested three principal suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters of Kano.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday in Kano.

He said the arrests followed intelligence-led policing directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and were carried out under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

According to him, the suspects, Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as “Chebe”, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, also known as “Wawo”, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters, were apprehended during a sting operation conducted between 10:00 p.m. on January, 17th and 4:00 a.m. on January, 18th 2005.

Kiyawa said the alleged ringleader, Auwalu, who is a nephew of the deceased housewife, had confessed to masterminding the killings.

He added that the suspect also admitted involvement in other violent crimes, including the killing and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters of Kano.

The police spokesman disclosed that items recovered from the suspects included four bloodstained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club (locally known as gora), some cash allegedly stolen from the crime scene, and other dangerous weapons.

He said investigations were ongoing to unravel further details surrounding the crime and possible accomplices.

Kiyawa commended the officers involved in the operation and appreciated members of the public for their support, cooperation and prayers.

He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring that all perpetrators of crime were brought to justice.
