Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has newly sworn-in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as electoral commission chairman with defending the integrity of the country’s elections and strengthening the institutional capacity of the electoral body.

President TInubu states thıs at the state house, Abuja, adding, that the chairman’s appointment and subsequent confirmation underscore the confidence reposed in them by both the executive and legislative arms of government.

According to him, the new assignment demands integrity, dedication, and patriotism, as the eyes of the nation would be on the electoral commission under their leadership.

The president emphasized that the credibility of elections must remain beyond reproach to sustain public trust.

“The country’s democracy has recorded notable progress, marked by innovations and reforms that have strengthened democratic institutions. However, sustaining the progress would require a renewed commitment to the core principles of democracy in a complex, multi-layered society.” He noted.

“The electoral process is the lifeblood of democracy, and it must protect the people’s exclusive right to choose their leaders and determine their collective future. Every phase of the electoral process—from voter registration to campaigning, polling, vote collation, and result declaration—must be transparent, non-violent, and credible”

The president charged the chairman to see their appointment as a call to service at a defining moment for the country’s democracy and to work tirelessly to improve the electoral system, address past challenges, and innovate for the future.
