INEC: Clashing Court Orders on ADC Leadership Dispute

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says is dealing with two opposing legal requests concerning the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement from X, it read that On 16th March 2026, the law firm Suleiman Usman SAN & Co. wrote to INEC, asking it not to recognise Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe as acting National Chairman, citing an ongoing Federal High Court case challenging the party’s leadership.

On the same day, Summit Law Chambers, representing Gombe, submitted a certified copy of the Court of Appeal ruling in the case between Senator David Mark and Hon. Gombe.

The firm asked INEC to stop recognising Mark and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as ADC’s National Chairman and Secretary, remove their names from the commission’s records, and suspend any dealings with their faction.

According to the statement, the Summit Law Chambers later accused INEC of ignoring the Court of Appeal’s orders by engaging Senator Mark’s group at meetings on 24th and 25th March.

“They urged the commission to invalidate those meetings, remove Mark’s faction from official records, and allow Gombe to manage ADC until the Federal High Court concludes its case”, the statement read.

The Court of Appeal, in its 12th March 2026 ruling, dismissed Senator Mark’s appeal and issued preservation orders to protect the ongoing Federal High Court proceedings.

INEC has not yet commented on how it will implement the court’s orders.
